Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are vital to the success of the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge! Our current needs are listed below. We encourage you to apply and join our volunteer team! The listings on this page change periodically, so be sure to come back if these tasks aren’t a match for you.

Volunteer in the Historic Flattop House

Volunteers aged 16 and older are needed to staff the museum’s historic Flattop House. Starting in August, the Flattop House will be open on the Third Sunday of the month. As the volunteer roster grows, so will the house’s schedule.

Flattop House volunteers will welcome visitors and answer questions about the house and life in the Secret City. Volunteers do not need to be history experts. Training will be provided.

Ready to get started? The museum’s volunteer application is at the bottom of this page (How to Apply). For other questions, contact the museum’s Education Director, Jessica Ordóñez, at jordonez@childrensmuseumofoakridge.org or (865) 482-1074.

Special Events Team

The special events team helps at the Museum’s special events such as the annual Gala (in November) and the International Festival (in February).

Outreach Team

Like people? Volunteers are needed to go to area events and festivals and represent the Children’s Museum. This includes setting up and taking down the display, informally talking to people about the museum, and answering their questions.

Mailing Team

Are mailings your calling? Volunteers are needed to help prepare bulk mailings several times a year.

Summer Teen Volunteers (ages 13-18)

Teen volunteers help at the Children’s Museum every summer in June and July. Training is provided. Here are some of the things they help with:

  • Preparing crafts for programs and special events
  • Cleaning exhibits
  • Gardening
  • Assisting in summer camps
  • Other projects as assigned
